HOPE OF NATIONS, by John S. Dickerson

This book is a work of nonfiction that combines Christianity and politics. John S. Dickerson spreads his content in three parts and twenty chapters. Dickerson begins with an Introduction and ends with a Conclusion. He end with Acknowledgements, an Author Bio, and end Notes to cite the sources consulted and used in each chapter. He uses charts and places material in bold to stress his points. Dickerson is a prize-winning research journalist and a seminary-trained chapter. He is senior pastor for a congregation in the metro Indianapolis area. He hs served as a commentator on national news outlets. He has written THE GREAT EVANGELICAL RECESSION.

I finished this book yesterday. It is pretty much what I expected. I am challenged by the message to those whom Dickerson calls "Truth-based thinkers." By this, he means those whose thinking aligns with Scripture. I am annoyed by his division of people into two camps. There are the "Truth-based thinkers" and the "Post-Truth thinkers." The main reason this annoys me is this author' apparent belief that to be grounded in "the truth" is to be conservative. "Post-truth thinkers" are those who subscribed to today's worldly thinking. I agree about we must align our thinking with Scripture. But does that mean always being conservative? When he addresses "Truth-based thinkers," he references our conservatism. "Liberal" is a dirty word. And these presumptions are very common in the Christian community. Apparently, the author, like so many Christian authors, confuses followers of Jesus with "the religious right." The book has a strong conservative bias on a wide variety of issues. In my mind, this bias overshadows the encouragement, lifting up of Jesus, and challenging messages to "Truth-based thinkers."

I recommend this book to those Christians who are students who attend higher education. And I recommend this book for all Christians who teach or educate at any level. But remember that "conservative" is not necessarily the same as Christian or truth.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to give a positive review of this book.
