CALL DOWN LIGHTNING, by Wallace Henley
This is a work of non-fiction in the Christian publishing genre. This work focuses on the end-times. It outlines how a historical revival can tell us what will happen near the end of the present age in human history. The author, Wallace Henley, is the senior pastor of a Baptist church congregation in Houston, Texas. He has written over 20 books. These include GOD AND CHURCHILL. Wallace Henley also is a journalist and has served both as a Congressional and Presidential aide. Henley opens with a Prologue and Introduction. He spreads his actual content throughout 16 chapters. Henley ends with what he calls an Afterglow, Acknowledgements, Notes (sources consulted for each chapter), and an author bio.
I was not sure what to expect from this book. I was sightly disappointed a all the focus on the historical revival and not much discussion of our current 2019 times. But it provides history about past revivals, what they are, how they work and why they tend not to last. The author reveals his right-leaning views by outlining the effects of a God-ordained spiritual revival. He lists repaying debts, healed marriages, reformed moral practices, an enhanced work ethic, and some others that reveal right-leaning, conservative values. I noted that the author does not mention, also as effects of revival, the presence of love and compassion for the vulnerable, racial healing and reconciliation, and caring for the poor. These are also mentioned in the Bible. I like how the author did stress in his work how many working-call people were transformed in the Welsh revival. While the author upholds the validity of speaking in tongues, being slain in the Spirit, and other gifts of the Spirit, I'm glad he does not dwell on them.
I recommend this book mainly for pastors, others in positions of Church leadership, and serious believers. Even some of them may be put off by the stress on the gifts and manifestations of the Spirit. But if they read the book with an open mind, they may learn something. The heart's desire of any pastor is to see God move among his or her "flock" and to see God move in the larger community.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review of this book. I was not required to give a positive review of this book.
